Janet Pivnick was a doctoral candidate at the University of Calgary. In her doctorate, she explored the challenges which arise when an environmental worldview on the part of the teacher and a modern worldview on the part of students, meet head-on in the classroom. The essay included here is based on one chapter of her dissertation which threads together the voices of elders, educators and students. She is currently the director of the environmental education organization Earth Wise.
