Bernd Heinrich, biologist, author, illustrator, and ultramarathoner, has been studying birds, bees, and butterflies since his kindergarten years in the northern German and Maine woods. He is on permanent sabbatical from the University of Vermont. Recent works include "Why We Run," "Winter World," and "Mind of The Raven," for which he won the Burroughs Medal for outstanding natural history writing. His sketches of wood frogs illustrate his Whole Terrain essay in 'Resilience.'
