Telephone interviews were conducted with eighteen professors of education from ten states. Each interviewee had been identified as teaching science or social studies methods with some degree of emphasis placed on environmental education (EE) theory or methods. Based on these interviews, this study provides a report on the ways in which EE theory and practice are currently incorporated into preservice elementary education science and social studies methods courses. It further reports perceptions of faculty about the barriers to incorporating EE in preservice programs and their ideas about action steps toward a more widespread use of EE as an integrating method for teaching preservice science and social studies methods courses.
