Below are easy changes that be made by individuals in their own workspace to help reduce their carbon footprint.

Office Equipment

**** DID YOU KNOW? ****
Leaving a computer monitor on at night wastes enough power to microwave three dinners. A PC left on for a year uses 25% of the energy of an average household.
  • Turn off computers, monitors, printers, copiers, coffee makers, radios and lights every night and when they are not being used. If you can't turn off the whole computer, turn off the monitor and printers.
  • If you can, use laptop computers — they consume 90% less energy than desktop computers.
  • If you can, use ink-jet printers — they consume 90% less energy than laser printers.
  • Make it easy on yourself. Plug this equipment into a power strip and just turn off the power strip at night. (Some appliances still consume electricity when you think they are off!)
  • Adjust your computer settings to “sleep” or turn off, when not used. See "Enabling the Power Management Feature" below!
  • Print double sided or reuse the clean side of a one-sided paper.

As a Group

  • Adopt a “last-person-out” policy — The last person leaving labs, lecture rooms, offices and meeting rooms should be responsible for turning off lights and equipment.
  • Remind your co-workers about turning things off.
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle still applies (in that order!)
