This seminar will provide an opportunity for students to examine the social and cultural prescriptions (gender, race, ethnicity, social class, religious affiliation, sexual orientation, physical ability, etc.) that define, enhance, and limit social, interpersonal, and professional interactions. Social diversity and cultural diversity will be defined in this class as concepts that are fluid but that also have tremendous power to shape the self and larger systems. These concepts will be particularly examined in relation to family systems, society, and clinical practice. It is hoped that as a consequence of this course, students will be better prepared to deal with the particular problems of oppression and intolerance, e.g. sexism, racism, ableism, classism, and heterosexism by having a firmer grasp on their personal values and their biases relative to majority-minority relations.
