Description:

Competency Area: Professional Identity Required of and restricted to 2011 CMHC and CMHC-SAAC spring entering students.

This course focuses on professional orientation and ethical practice in counseling. Students will gain a working knowledge of the field of mental health counseling through topics such as counseling identity, counseling organizations, credentialing and licensure, as well as professional writing for counselors using APA format. Additionally, students will understand ethical practice for counselors through the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the American Mental Health Counselors Association (AMHCA) codes of ethics and standards. Students will also understand legal issues in counseling practice and the role of the counselor as an advocate for social justice and for the profession.
