This course presents the theory and practice of a multicultural counseling approach, building on the foundation presented in Social and Cultural Diversity (PYS 604). Students will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of how a multicultural approach to diversity, social justice, and advocacy influences counseling process. There will be an emphasis on applied case conceptualization and clinical interventions, using a variety of expressive arts and mind-body techniques, drawn from dance-movement therapy, storytelling, ritual, sand play therapy, art therapy, spiritual practice, and mindfulness meditation, that are useful when working with people across cultures. Students will be given the opportunity to examine a variety of diverse systems (family, community, national, global) and how these systems impact our attitude and our approach with clients.
