Required of and restricted to MFT I students.
This course will examine the historical development, theoretical underpinnings, and clinical foundation of family therapy. Communications theory and systems theory will be introduced and connected to several models of family therapy, including Bowen Family Systems, Structural Family Therapy, and Strategic Family Therapy. Particular attention will be given to the application of clinical models to clinical practice. The feminist critique of family therapy will be introduced and students will be encouraged to critically examine the clinical models and larger systemic framework from a social justice perspective. Meets June 2 – July 21.
