David Morrill, MBA '09
David Morrill is a graduate of Antioch University New England's new Organizational and Environmental Sustainability (Green MBA) program. He is now the recycling coordinator at Keene State College in Keene, New Hampshire. Here David writes about his experience at AUNE. I decided to come to Antioch University New England on the strength of its Organizational and Environmental Sustainability program. I'm from Keene and had been socially involved with Antioch University New England for several years. I appreciated the AUNE community and knew it was a good fit for me. When I first heard ads for the Green MBA on the radio, I was a member of a town advisory group in Peterborough, New Hampshire, called the Gen XY Committee, made up of eighteen to thirty-five year-olds. Its purpose is to give young residents a voice in town government and the local community. After I worked on Gen XY projects for a year, I saw the influence and power business has, and I decided I wanted to use that influence to create positive change in the world. I realized that the Green MBA offered me a perfect way to do that. The degree is giving me the specialized knowledge to really create an alternative to our current, unsustainable practices, leading to more enlightened business methods that will ensure a healthy global community. I plan to create 'green' economic development in low-income areas: I see potential for industries that are economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable. I believe these industries can regenerate and support communities and the environment. I've been delighted at how my professors, coursework, and contacts at Antioch have helped me towards my goals. The knowledge I've gained has been valuable beyond my expectations, and the program really helped me distill my broad goals of working for positive change in the world into more specific ideas that I can target realistically. Perhaps helping me discover what I really want to do has been the most valuable thing Antioch has given me. Realizing my life's mission has been a transformative experience. The faculty at AUNE are exemplary leaders who are dedicated to our learning and to the development of our leadership styles. My classmates are inspiring, brilliant, wonderful people. I am consistently amazed by their contributions to class discussions. Also, I've had the opportunity to help start and co-lead AUNE's new chapter of Net Impact. This is an international nonprofit organization aimed at making a positive impact on society by growing and strengthening a community of new leaders who use business to improve the world. Net Impact is also a great networking tool and has given me the chance to build my leadership skills. | ||||
