Resource Management and Conservation
Department of Environmental Studies

Project Manager
Environmental Compliance Services
Undergraduate: General Sciences, Ithaca College

Sigurd Spearing, MS ’06Why did you choose the Resource Management and Conservation program?
The program had the right combination of self-directed learning, financial administrative skills, science skills, group dynamics and psychology. These are things that I didn't find in more conventional programs.

What was the most useful part of your program?
The ability to understand the nuances of group dynamics, and realizing the importance of bringing stakeholders together. I work with state regulators, scientists, engineers, community planners, clients, town officials—learning how to streamline communication is essential in conceptualizing and solving complex problems that involve multiple parties.

My RMC experience gave me a great combination of street smarts and practical scientific knowledge. I was part of a faculty and student research group that analyzed the impact of climate change on Keene's stormwater system. We presented our findings right before the major flooding in Keene in October of 2005. The research allowed us to apply the complex concepts of global warming to the local level.
