Kendra Ulrich Chosen as Fellow by U.S. Congressional Progressive Caucus

AUNE student will work with head of caucus in Washington

(Keene, NH) - Kendra Ulrich, a master's candidate in the Environmental Studies department at Antioch University New England (AUNE), will serve as the graduate school's fifth Congressional Progressive Caucus Fellow. The fellowship, a unique arrangement between AUNE and the 80-plus member Congressional Progressive Caucus, is the only one of its kind in the country.

Ulrich will work with Congressman Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ), co-chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus (CPC) and ranking member of the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands. "We are pleased to see this partnership enter its fifth year," Grijalva said. "Antioch University New England's Advocacy for Social Justice and Sustainability program Fellow will help caucus members address a wide variety of urgent public policy challenges, from the local to the international levels."

The first-of-its-kind fellowship began in 2007 as a collaboration between AUNE's Advocacy for Social Justice and Sustainability (ASJS) concentration and the Congressional Progressive Caucus. The fellowship allows at least one ASJS student or alum to work in Washington, DC, for the caucus and its members every summer.

"The opportunity to work with the Progressive Caucus is very exciting," Ulrich said. "I am looking forward to this chance to expand upon the knowledge and skills I have gained through my past work experience and my studies at Antioch University New England.

"With the party turnover in the House last fall, the work of the Progressive Caucus is now more critical than ever. I am committed to helping with the pertinent legislative issues that have arisen as a result of the change in leadership in the House. I anticipate learning a great deal in the process," Ulrich said.

"The fellowship is a tremendous opportunity for AUNE students and graduates to enhance their skills and learning through public service," said Abigail Abrash Walton, chair of the CPC Fellowship Selection Committee and faculty member in AUNE's Environmental Studies department. "We are thrilled to continue this collaboration with the CPC."

About Kendra Ulrich
Ulrich is the New Hampshire organizer for the Safe and Green campaign, focusing on the responsible decommissioning of the Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant, scheduled for March 2012. She is slated to graduate from AUNE in May 2012, with an MS in Environmental Studies and an ASJS concentration.

Before coming to AUNE, Ulrich spent four years as a full-time grassroots organizer for environmental justice issues. As part of her work with a nationwide network of environmental nonprofits, she provided leadership and campaign support to organizations in several states and worked on direct-polluter pressure campaigns as well as state and federal environmental initiatives.

Ulrich grew up in the Cleveland, Ohio, area and is a 2006 graduate of Ohio State University, where she studied political science and women's studies. She is committed to creating a sustainable society and ensuring environmental equality for all people.
