NEWS RELEASEContact: Jan Fiderio at 603.283.2107 April 28, 2010 for Immediate Release Antioch University New England Hosts Free 2010 Spring Speaker Series Events April 15, 22, and 29Renowned AUNE trustee, alumni authors, educators, and faculty share their views and work(Keene, NH) April 6, 2010 -Antioch University New England (AUNE) will host three Speaker Series events in April, which are free and open to the public. On Thursday, April 15, AUNE trustee Donald L. Shumway, president and CEO of Crotched Mountain Foundation in Greenfield, New Hampshire, will speak on environmental ethics and disability rights. Mr. Shumway, who is a leading New Hampshire advocate for people with disabilities, will share how individuals and organizations can create new ways to foster inclusion of vulnerable populations, and promote environmental sustainability. The event starts at 7 p.m. On Thursday, April 22 at 7 p.m. three alumni authors from the Department of Environmental Studies will discuss their books and how their environmental studies at Antioch University New England led to individual, contrasting paths. Philip Ackerman-Leist (MS'06) will talk about writing his narrative memoir, Up Tunket Road: The Education of a Modern Homesteader, a reflection on the future of simple living. Sandy Macfarlane (MS'99) will explore her biography, Tiggie: The Lure and Lore of Commercial Fishing in New England, which tells the story of a Cape Cod shell fisherman in the 1940s through '60s. Michael Wojtech (MS'00) will discuss his field guide, Bark of the Northeast, a unique guide that shows readers how to teach themselves observation skills to connect to their outdoor surroundings. The three authors will also share their personal stories about the process of publication. The Speaker Series concludes on Thursday, April 29 at 7 p.m. with Place- and Community-Based Education in Schools, featuring David Sobel (AUNE Department of Education Core Faculty Member, MEd'72) and Jen Kramer (MEd'01). Drawing from his latest book, Place- and Community-Based Education in Schools (Sociocultural, Political and Historical Studies in Education), David will illustrate core concepts using a recent real-world example. Alumna Jen Kramer will talk about the film her eighth grade class made about the Guilford Country Store in Vermont for the Friends of Algiers, a local community preservation group. The group is now using the students' video as the showpiece for a fund-raising initiative to purchase and restore the building for use as a store, café, and community center.
