Antioch University New England's Dr. Roger Peterson receives life-time achievement honor

Peterson named Distinguished Professional Psychologist; accepts lifetime achievement award for exemplary contributions to professional psychology education on January 18.

Keene, NH - Dr. Roger Peterson, professor and chair of Antioch University New England's Department of Clinical Psychology, recently received a lifetime achievement award from the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology (NCSPP). The council presented Peterson with the Distinguished Professional Psychologist Award for Exemplary Contributions to Professional Psychology Education on January 18 at the NCSPP Winter Meeting in Austin, Texas.

When presenting the award, Dr. James E. Dobbins, president of NCSPP noted Peterson's many contributions to the development of the NCSPP training model and his long-term contributions to the field of professional psychology education and training over the course of his career. "Dr. Peterson's work on standards in professional psychology was…foundational and a testimony to the vision that he has as a leader and pioneer in the professional psychology movement," said Dobbins. The NCSPP has presented this award for lifetime achievement only twice before in its thirty-two-year existence.

Antioch University New England's Dr. Lorraine Mangione, when nominating Peterson noted, "Dr. Peterson has made a major impact in the PsyD (Doctor of Psychology) movement. He has framed the educational model that we all use." The NCSPP received letters of support for Dr. Peterson's nomination from Dr. Mary Beth Kenkel, Dean of the School of Psychology at Florida Institute of Technology; Dr. George Stricker, Distinguished Research Professor of the Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies of Adelphi University; and Dr. Donald Peterson, Professor Emeritus and founding dean of the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Science at Rutgers University (he has recently passed away).

Dr. Peterson was the founding associate director of the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology at Antioch University New England. He has served as professor and chair of the department since 1988. In addition to his work at Antioch University New England, Dr. Peterson has served as a past president of NCSPP and has chaired NCSPP national conferences on the core curriculum and on educational standards (with Dr. Donald R. Peterson). He was a member of the Committee on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association from 1999-2004 and currently serves on the organization's Commission on Accreditation.

The NCSPP is an organization made up of delegates from APA-accredited programs and schools of professional psychology. The organization's mission is to advance the development of the highest quality of graduate training in professional psychology.
