NEWS RELEASEContact: Jan Fiderio at 603.283.2107 February 12, 2012 for Immediate Release Educators: Learn How to Use Mapmaking, at March 31 AUNE WorkshopMaps can be an effective part of elementary curriculum (Keene, NH) -- How does a ten-year-old see the landscape? How can mapmaking be a useful part of curriculum? Find out, in a workshop for educators on how to use mapmaking to engage children in learning math, social studies and language arts. Mapmaking with Children: A Sense of Place for the Elementary Years will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, March 31, at Antioch University New England (AUNE). David Sobel, core faculty member in AUNE’s Department of Education and well- known speaker on place-based education, will facilitate the workshop. He is the author of Mapmaking with Children: Sense of Place Education for the Elementary Years. Bob Coulter, director of the Litzsinger Road Ecology Center in St. Louis, Missouri, and an AUNE alumnus, will be a guest presenter. Participants will draw maps, solve problems and plan curriculum to help children develop an understanding of geography. Bring your boots: the workshop isn’t confined to the classroom. Outdoors, there will be a mapmaking and treasure hunt and an outdoor geocaching experience, integrated with math trail challenges. The workshop is free to current AUNE students.
