The university was chosen by an independent panel of judges, who recognized AUNE's leadership in implementing sustainable practices that are environmentally friendly and good for the bottom line.

Business NH announced awards in three categories: Green Practices, Green Building and Green Products. AUNE received the honor in the Green Practices category for its energy efficiency, energy savings and sustainability processes. AUNE has been a leader in integrating sustainability into its educational curricula and its operations, research and engagement efforts, as well as in energy conservation and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. The school maintains comprehensive conservation programs in the areas of energy, sourcing, recycling, waste disposal, food, landscaping, transportation and construction, among others.

In 2010, AUNE, which has one of the lowest greenhouse gas emissions rates among educational institutions of its caliber, adopted a ten-year climate action plan to achieve carbon neutrality by the year 2020. AUNE's president, Dr. David Caruso, is among a select group of signatories to the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment.

AUNE has partnered with Clean Air-Cool Planet, is a member of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), and is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ENERGY STAR partner.

The Lean & Green Awards reception will be held on Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at the Portsmouth Harbor Events and Conference Center. Keynote speaker will be Cameron Wake, research associate professor at the University of New Hampshire and director of Carbon Solutions New England, who will discuss New Hampshire's environmental challenges and possible solutions.

Fellow award winners are The Mount Washington Cog Railway, in Bretton Woods; Newmarket International, in Portsmouth; AutoFair, in Manchester; Kalwall Corporation, in Manchester; and The Nature of Things, in Nashua.

Congratulations also go to AUNE alumna Deborah Gleeson, founder of The Nature of Things, a business that provides educational services with an environmental focus. 2nd Nature Academy, the first school in New Hampshire to be awarded LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, is a Nature of Things business. Ms. Gleeson is the founder and principal of the school.
