NEWS RELEASEContact: Jan Fiderio at 603-283-2107 March 3, 2010 for Immediate Release Antioch University New England Receives National HonorThe President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with DistinctionAntioch University New England (AUNE) has been named to the 2009 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction. The Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning, and civic engagement. "Antioch University New England values community engagement: using place-based practices to foster scholarship, activism, and service learning," said AUNE President David Caruso. "This award is a reflection of our ongoing commitment to our community and a stellar example of our mission in action." AUNE students demonstrated this commitment by engaging in over 126,300 hours of community service in 2009. To receive the award AUNE described and documented four exemplary programs or projects supported by faculty and graduate student volunteer efforts. The projects noted were the Antioch Psychological Services Center, an outpatient counseling/mental health center that provided diagnostic and therapeutic services to at-risk youth; Cool Monadnock, a three-year collaborative project that introduced a new regional model for achieving greenhouse gas reduction in the area; the Monadnock Ecological Research and Education project (MERE), an ongoing venture that includes research, monitoring, and educational outreach on Mount Monadnock; and the 2009 Monadnock Earth Festival, a week-long celebration of our environment and community organized and run by AUNE students. Only two higher education institutions in New Hampshire were named to the Honor Roll with Distinction: Antioch University New England and Keene State College. Awards will be presented in March at the American Council on Education annual meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, and at the National Conference of Volunteering and Service Conference in New York City in June. The Corporation for National and Community Service oversees the Honor Roll in collaboration with the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, Campus Compact, and the American Council on Education. The Honor Roll includes six colleges and universities that are recognized as Presidential Awardees, with an additional 115 named to the Distinction List, and 621 schools named as Honor Roll members. Honorees are chosen based on a series of selection factors including the scope and innovation of service projects, percentage of student participation in service activities, incentives for service, and the extent to which the school offers academic service-learning courses.
