Scholarships Go to Environmental Studies Students at Antioch University New England

Awards to be presented for academic and environmental leadership

The Department of Environmental Studies at Antioch University New England (AUNE) is presenting scholarship awards to several students at its end-of-year celebration on Friday, May 13. The scholarships and recipients are:

The William R. Ginsberg and Thomas K. Wessels Environmental Studies Scholarship 2011 Award: Jessica Gerrior-Baribault

This scholarship is awarded by the faculty of the Department of Environmental Studies to a student who has displayed academic excellence and environmental leadership.

Jessica Gerrior-Baribault, Antrim, New Hampshire, the third recipient of this scholarship, is completing her master’ s degree in environmental studies with a concentration in environmental education.

Jess has shown leadership in her ability to balance a full course load and internships with the work of teaching, volunteering and solo parenting. She co-founded and coordinates an annual earth-centered festival that collects food for area food banks and is helping to lead New Hampshire's children-in-nature movement. This year she will help build a sustainable food initiative in local schools. Jess is also an avid photographer, freecycler and tree climber.

The Center for Tropical Ecology and Conservation (CTEC) 2011 Scholarship:

Kayla Cranston, Charissa Jones and Amber Kleiman

The Center for Tropical Ecology at AUNE promotes the sustainable and just use of tropical ecosystems. It provides scholarships from both the Tropical Seed Scholarship Endowment and the Student-Raised Scholarship to support graduate students conducting internships, projects or research in the tropics. The students and their projects are:

Kayla Cranston, PhD student, Mesa, Arizona. Project: Capacity Building for Conservation of Biodiversity in East Africa: A National Conservation Educator’ s Perspective.

Charissa Jones, master of science, environmental education. Project: Culture and Conservation in a Plural Society; Perspectives from Local Practitioners, Suriname.

Amber Kleiman, master of science, conservation biology. Project: Chimpanzee Presence and Movement in a Reforested Corridor in Gishwati National Forest, Rwanda.

U.S. Congressional Progressive Caucus 2011 Fellow: Kendra Ulrich, ES master of science student

This annual fellowship, founded in 2007, sends one outstanding student or alumnus of the Department of Environmental Studies’ Advocacy for Social Justice and Sustainability master’ s degree concentration to work with the 80-plus-member U.S. Congressional Progressive Caucus in Washington, D.C. The caucus was founded by members of the U.S. House of Representatives in the early 1990s “ to give voice to the needs and aspirations of all Americans and to build a more just and humane society.” AUNE’ s fellowship with the Progressive Caucus is the only one of its kind.
