AUNE President David Caruso Named to National Committee on Climate Adaptation

Initial efforts include how to showcase higher-education solutions that reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Dr. David Caruso, president of Antioch University New England (AUNE), has been named to the Adaptation Committee of Second Nature, the lead supporting organization of the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC).

The committee’s purpose is to evaluate how colleges and universities can use research, teaching, knowledge, skills and local outreach to serve as climate adaptation hubs in their communities. The group is chaired by Dr. James Buizer, science policy advisor to the president of Arizona State University and executive director for strategic institutional advancement. Dr. Buizer also participated actively in the 2008 Nobel Peace Prize- winning effort by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

The project and the committee, composed of six to twelve experts in the fields of higher education and climate adaptation, will be introduced during the ACUPCC Climate Leadership Summit in Washington, D.C., on June 24.

As a member of ACUPCC, AUNE is one of 677 universities and colleges that have pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve climate neutrality, and to help educate the rest of society to do the same. In 2010, AUNE completed work on its Climate Action Plan, an official campus-approved 10-year road map to achieving carbon neutrality by the year 2020. The plan includes the goals and action steps recommended by AUNE's Carbon Neutrality Task Force, a stellar group of AUNE alumni, students, faculty, staff, administrators and external experts.
