Know a Tree by its Bark, With New Book by Antioch University New England
Alumnus
Michael Wojtech writes a guide to identifying regional trees
(Keene, NH) -- Bark: A Field Guide to Trees of the Northeast, by Michael Wojtech (MS ’ 96), an Antioch
University New England (AUNE) alumnus, has been published by University Press New
England.
The book is a guide to the sixty-seven native and naturalized tree species in the region,
and shows how to identify them by their bark alone. It is based on the thesis Wojtech
wrote for AUNE’ s Conservation Biology program, Field Guide to Bark Characteristics
of New England Trees. Tom Wessels, core faculty member in the Department of
Environmental Studies and Wojtech’ s thesis advisor, wrote the foreword to Bark.
The 280-page, color-illustrated book was published by University Press New England.
Wojtech, who lives in Williamsburg, Massachusetts, edited Volume 11 of Whole Terrain
(the Gratitude and Greed, 2002-2003) while at AUNE. He now researches, writes and
teaches about trees and other aspects of natural history. He will give several workshops
this year:
- Saturday June 25, 9 a.m. Bark Ecology and ID – Get to Know Your Trees –
Arnold Arboretum of Harvard University, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts.
- Saturday, November 19, 9:30 a.m. Bark: Get to Know Your Trees – Berkshire
