Leave No Child Inside
Antioch and partners to host Last Child in the Woods author Richard Louv on November 3rd.
Keene, NH - Richard Louv, author of the acclaimed Last Child in the Woods: Saving our children from Nature Deficit Disorder, will speak at Keene's United Church of Christ on November 3 at 7:00 in the evening.
In his writing and presentations, Louv links the lack of time that children spend outdoors to a number of disturbing childhood trends including increases in obesity, attention disorders, and depression. Louv believes that children who have the chance to experience our natural world regularly thrive in intellectual, spiritual and physical ways. "Getting kids outdoors more, riding bikes, running, swimming-and, especially, experiencing nature directly-could serve as an antidote to much of what ails the young," writes Louv. During his November 3rd presentation, Louv will offer parents, teachers, conservationists, and others suggestions on how they can help children reconnect with nature and as well as discuss research that links access to nature with healthy child development. A question and answer period will follow his presentation.
Richard Louv is the chairman of the Children and Nature Network, a non-profit organization that encourages and supports people and organizations working to reconnect children with nature.
He is the author of seven books and is also a columnist with the San Diego Union-Tribune. He has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Christian Science Monitor and other publications.
Antioch University New England, the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, Sophia's Hearth and the Harris Center for Conservation Education sponsor Louv's visit.
This program, part of the Antioch University New England (AUNE) Fall Speakers Series, is free and open to the public. The program will begin at 7:00 p.m. on November 3rd. For more information, please contact Jack Calhoun at 603-283-2108.
