Antioch University New England to present Horace Mann awards at Commencement

Donald D. Davis and H. Meade Cadot to be honored

Keene, NH - During this year's commencement on May tenth Antioch University New England will present two of the prestigious Horace Mann awards, Antioch University system's highest tribute. These awards honor exemplary individuals who, through their work or volunteerism, have made a difference in the lives of others and who embody the spirit of Horace Mann, the first president of Antioch (1852 to 1859). Horace Mann was a Massachusetts state legislator, a state senator, the state's first Secretary of Education - where he established the Massachusetts public school system - and a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. Mann accepted personal responsibility for the improvement of the human race and led the reform for the equal right to education for every man and woman. The well-known quotation “Be ashamed to die until you have won some victory for humanity” was spoken by Horace Mann at his last commencement at Antioch.

Antioch University New England continues the tradition begun by Mann by empowering graduates to go do good work, to be actively engaged in the community, and to be agents for social change. This year's Horace Mann awards honor two local individuals.

Award recipient Donald D. Davis
Antioch University New England presents this year's first award posthumously, to long-time Keene resident Donald D. Davis to honor his dedication to the Antioch and Keene communities where he contributed his expertise, time, and friendship. As one of AUNE's original board of visitors in the early 1980s, Don was a kindred spirit who shared and lived Antioch University New England's mission tenets of service and leadership. In a show of continued support, Mr. Davis generously bequeathed an endowed scholarship to AUNE. To ensure that Mr. Davis' legacy of service continues in our community, AUNE has named the scholarship the Donald D. Davis Scholarship for Social Responsibility. AUNE will award the scholarship each year to commendable students involved in local community service efforts. Former Antioch University chancellor, former Antioch University New England president, and Organization & Management alumnus ('77) Jim Craiglow will present the award to Mr. Davis' son and daughter: Jeff and Carolyn Davis.

Award recipient H. Meade Cadot
Antioch University New England will present the second Horace Mann award given this year to a member of the AUNE faculty, H. Meade Cadot. Meade Cadot has taught hundreds of students in the Department of Environmental Studies over the past 34 years and retires this year. While over 30 years of teaching and training environmental leaders deserves an award in itself, AUNE also recognizes Meade for his contribution to local land conservation. In partnerships with a variety of land trusts, conservation groups, and caring citizens, Meade has helped spearhead the protection of over 12,000 acres of New Hampshire land over the past 25 years. Meade has been honored in many ways. In 2007, The New Hampshire Audubon Society created the H. Meade Cadot Award, named in his honor, to pay tribute to the society's exemplary conservation partners. He has also received the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests Sarah Thorne Conservation Award (2005), the New Hampshire Audubon's Tudor Richards Award (2004), and the Monadnock Conservancy's Abe Wolfe Land Protection Award (2002). He has served as the director of the Harris Center for Conservation Education since 1975. Antioch University New England is proud to recognize Meade for his many years of service and dedication to the students, faculty and staff of AUNE and for ensuring that Antioch University New England will always be surrounded by a natural environment. Joy Ackerman, core faculty and chair of the Department of Environmental Studies will present the award to Meade.
