Search Engines
When using search engines to do research on the Internet, keep in mind that most of them have no quality control guidelines. Look for ways to limit your search to academic (.edu), government (.gov), or organization (.org) websites. More information about evaluating Internet resources.
Instead of heading first to Google or Yahoo! or AltaVista, try the following search engines which offer a little something extra:
- InfoMine Scholarly
internet resource collections, organized by subject
- MetaCrawler
Searches several major search engines at once (including Google, Yahoo, AltaVista,
Ask Jeeves, LookSmart, FindWhat).
- Scirus Scirus combines
a targeted crawler from FAST that focuses only on web sites with scientific content,
with Elsevier’s massive scientific information resources drawn from thousands of
journals and books.
- SciSeek SciSeek is a
focused web directory created by human editors. It’s a useful tool for browsing
for information in a specific scientific area.
- Teoma A major search engine
which “ranks a site based on the number of same-subject pages that reference it, not j
ust general popularity”
