About the database

Mental Measurements Yearbook Online contains full-text information about all English-language standardized tests covering educational skills, personality, vocational aptitude, psychology, and related areas as included in the printed Mental Measurements Yearbooks. (Print volumes of MMY can be found on the Antioch Library reference shelves at REF Z 5814.P8 M4.) Information provided includes the name of the test author and publisher as well as scoring information and the volume of the print Yearbook in which the test was first included. Full-text for each test includes an overview of the test and description of test materials as well as one or more reviews of the test.

Search tips

  • It doesn’t matter whether you enter your search in capital or small letters. The same records will be retrieved either way.
  • To find a test by subject, use the Table of Contents button on the main search page. This will bring you to a list of subjects from Achievement to Vocations. By clicking on a subject, you will get a list of tests in that subject area.
  • Each record in this database contains information in specific fields. The fields most useful will be the Author field (AU), Test name field (TN), and the Acronym field (AC). You can limit your search to a particular field to find a test by the author’s name, the test name, or by its acronym if it is commonly used.
    • Using the Author field: The AU field contains the author(s) of the test described in the record. An organization which has developed a test will be listed in the author field. For individual authors, names are listed last name first, followed by first name and middle initial.
    • Using the Test Name field: You can search for the complete test name if you know it, or you can search for one or more words to retrieve all tests with those words in the name.
    • Using the Acronym field: Tests are often known by acronym. Acronyms are only listed if the author or publisher has made substantial use of the acronym in referring to the test, or if the test is widely known by the acronym.
  • Using the Index: All searchable fields have a separate index. You can scroll through any Index to find terms that you want to search for, such as a particular publication date or the exact spelling of a reviewer’s or author’s name. On the right-hand side of the search page, click on Index. The default is the General or free-text index; use the drop-down menu to select the Index for some other searchable field such as Author or Test Name. This will give you an alphabetical listing of words used in that particular field; click on a word or name to see the records for tests with fields containing that word or name.
  • For more help, click on the Database Information button on the main search page.

How to cite MMY

You are using an online version of Mental Measurements Yearbook, so you will need to use a format for citing an electronic resource. Learn more about on APA guidelines, or consult the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Fifth Edition in the library (available to check out at BF76.7 .P83 2001, or in the reference section at REF BF76.7 .P83 2001). The source is SilverPlatter and the database name is Mental Measurements Yearbook. For the date retrieved use the date of the e-mail containing the citation(s), if one of the librarians sent them to you, or the date you did the search.

Citing information from the online version of Mental Measurements Yearbook is different from citing the print version. Much of the information in the print version (editors, publication dates, page numbers, etc.) is not in the online version, so you are not able to provide it. Don’t be confused by what appears to be date and publisher information. For example, the following is from an entry in the online version of Mental Measurements Yearbook:

Test Name: Beck Depression Inventory-II
Test Author: Beck-Aaron-T; Steer-Robert-A; Brown-Gregory-K [These are the authors of the test, not the work you are citing.]
Publication Date: 1961-1996 [Refers to publication date of the test, not the work you are citing]
Scores: Total score only
Reviewer: Arbisi-Paul-A; Farmer-Richard-F [These are the authors of the work you are citing]
Review Indicator: 2 reviews available
Publisher: The Psychological Corporation 555 Academic Court San Antonio TX 78204-2498 [Refers to the publisher of the test, not the work you are citing]
Acronym: BDI-II
Mental Measurements Yearbook: 14 Mental Measurements Yearbook [This tells you which print volume of Mental Measurements Yearbook the “article” originally appeared in]
Accession Number: 14122148

According to APA guidelines, you would cite general information from the above “article” (such as purpose, population, etc.) as follows:

Beck Depression Inventory-II. 14 Mental Measurements Yearbook. (n.d.) Retrieved April 23, 2002, from SilverPlatter Mental Measurements Yearbook database.

(n.d.) indicates that no publication date for the article is given. The retrieval date is either the date you got the information from the database OR the date of the email in which you received the information from one of the librarians.

If you use information from one of the reviews in the entry, cite it as follows, using the name of the person who wrote the particular review:

Arbisi, Paul A. Beck Depression Inventory-II. 14 Mental Measurements Yearbook. (n.d.) Retrieved April 23, 2002, from SilverPlatter Mental Measurements Yearbook database.

Access to this and other information on citing your resources can be found by following the link to the library’s Citation Guides.
