What is JSTOR?

JSTOR is a full text, online database of scholarly, research journals. ANE Library has a subscription to JSTOR’s collection of journals in Ecology & Botany. Full text coverage for the journals in this collection begins with the first issues, making it a true archive. (However, full text coverage does not include the most recent issues; see more information on this under What is the “moving wall”?) You can read the full text of an article online or choose to download it in one of several formats.

What journals are in JSTOR?

The following titles are included in the Ecology & Botany collection:

  • American Journal of Botany
  • American Midland Naturalist
  • American Naturalist
  • Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden
  • Annual Review of Ecology and Systematics
  • Biotropica
  • Brittonia
  • Conservation Biology
  • Diversity and Distributions
  • Ecological Applications
  • Ecological Monographs
  • Ecology
  • Evolution
  • Functional Ecology
  • Global Ecology and Biogeography
  • International Journal of Plant Sciences
  • Journal of Animal Ecology
  • Journal of Applied Ecology
  • Journal of Biogeography
  • Journal of Ecology
  • Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society
  • Journal of Tropical Ecology
  • Limnology and Oceanography
  • Missouri Botanical Garden Annual Report
  • New Phytologist
  • Paleobiology
  • Quarterly Review of Biology
  • Systematic Biology
  • Systematic Botany

What is the “moving wall”?

Full text for journals in JSTOR is not available for the most recent 3-5 years of publication. This time period is known as the “moving wall” and is indicated for every journal in the detailed list for each collection. If a journal’s “moving wall” number is 5, then full text for that journal is not in JSTOR for anything published within the last 5 years. In 2004, that means full text coverage for that journal stops with 1999.

How do I search in JSTOR?

  • To search for a particular article or subject:
    • On the JSTOR main page click on Search. The Basic Search page gives you several options for searching by author, title, or word(s) in full text or abstract.
    • Note: On the Search page, you must select a collection of journals to be searched before starting your search.
  • To see what is available in a particular journal:
    • On the JSTOR main page click on Browse. Click on a journal title in the discipline list and you will see a list of volumes available to search. You can see the Table of Contents for any available issue.
