Urban Agriculture Intern (Summer Internship)

Urban Agriculture Intern

Boston Natural Areas Network (BNAN), organized in 1977, works to preserve, expand and improve urban open space through community organizing, acquisition, ownership, programming, development and management of special kinds of urban land - Urban Wilds, Greenways and Community Gardens. In all of its endeavors, BNAN is guided by local citizens advocating for their open spaces and assisting them to preserve and shape their communities.

The Urban Agriculture Intern will work with BNAN’s Garden Educator and Urban Grower at two food production sites. City Natives, the first site, is a ½ acre horticultural learning center, native plant nursery and community green space in Mattapan. Working alongside the Garden Educator, the intern will engage Boston gardeners of all ages and backgrounds in the process of growing food and tending urban green spaces.

The second site, the Northampton Square Rooftop Garden, is located in Roxbury and encompasses a 6,500 square foot area atop a parking garage. The primary focus at the rooftop garden is to engage youth participants, primarily high school students, in the process of growing a diverse selection of vegetables for the Preventive Food Pantry at Boston Medical Center. Secondarily, the site functions to grow food at standard production rates using biointensive and biodynamic growing techniques.

From an agricultural perspective, the intern will be exposed to a variety of growing and season extension techniques including, but not limited to, the use of companion planting, the construction of raised beds and low tunnels as well as a range of organic growing practices. From an educational perspective, the intern will also participate and lead farm-based learning opportunities for high school students and lead adult volunteers in gardening tasks.
