ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The Partnership for Los Angeles Schools (the Partnership) was founded in 2007 as the cornerstone of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa’s strategy to improve education in Los Angeles. An independent, nonprofit organization, the Partnership contracts with LAUSD to transform and turn around historically under-performing schools in LAUSD. The Partnership currently manages 17 schools in three communities ; Boyle Heights (East LA), Central LA (south of downtown), and Watts ; and serves approximately 16,000 students. It is the only major school turnaround organization operating at scale in California.

OPPORTUNITY

The Partnership Teacher Development team’s mission is to improve the level of classroom instruction across Partnership schools in Boyle Heights, South Central, and Watts by building teachers’ understanding of what effective teaching (aligned to the Teaching and Learning Framework) and an effective professional growth cycle look like, and by building administrators’ capacity to implement a development-focused, multiple-measure teacher evaluation system.

The Partnership Pioneers is the signature teacher development program led by the Teacher Development team. Pioneers are teacher leaders who represent K-12 across all Partnership schools who have been selected to be a part of a robust teacher growth and development program. The Pioneers are committed and innovative teacher who seek to improve their teaching practice and influence the instructional effectiveness and professional development practices at their school site.

The Teacher Development Coach will primarily support Pioneer teacher leaders at school sites and work collaboratively with all stakeholders involved in their growth and development cycles and professional development. Teacher Development Coach is a full-time, regular position. Candidate will work a 240-day calendar.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
– Lead teachers in the Pioneer program to transition successfully to a multiple measure evaluation system focused on teacher growth and development across all Partnership for Los Angeles network schools
– Engage, coach, and support teacher leaders to complete and implement individual professional growth plans, formal observation cycles, and analysis of classroom assessment and survey data
– Develop and deliver training materials for teacher leaders related to the multiple measure teacher growth and development process. Create aligned support and development opportunities
– Conduct classroom observations and coaching conversations to support teacher growth and student learning
– Engage teacher leaders in developing and sharing effective teaching strategies and curriculum with an emphasis on video observation and supporting documentation
– Assist site leaders to observe for practices of professional growth cycles
– Assist site leaders to support effective professional growth cycles
– Act as a liaison between school sites, the teacher development team, Partnership instructional staff, and appropriate LAUSD central office staff
– Support the teacher development team with implementation planning and improving processes to support observers, peer observers, and Pioneer teacher leaders
– Participate as a member of the instructional team and other relevant work groups to exchange information, coordinate activities, develop teacher support resources, and resolve issues or concerns
– Organize and maintain required records

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate will have:

Skills
– Has implemented multiple measure teacher evaluation systems focused on teacher growth and development
– Schoolwide leadership experiences designing and organizing professional development (in positions such as coach, coordinator, assistant principal)
– Experiences facilitating professional development of the LAUSD Teaching & Learning Framework (or related professional development and evaluation tool) and Common Core State Standards for adult learners
– Demonstrated ability to build strong working and mentoring relationships with adults that leads to demonstrated improvement in classroom practice (ex. BTSA coach, College Ready Promise implementation leads)
– Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively with administrative staff, instructional staff, and support staff
– Strong analytical skills, including the ability to utilize quantitative and qualitative analysis to support decision-making
– Exceptional critical thinking skills
– Excellent oral and written communication skills
– Demonstrated ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced work environment
– A positive outlook and flexibility in stressful situations
– Strong computer skills (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, Google Docs, Dropbox, webinars)
– Ability to use interactive online database of teacher development documents and resources

Knowledge of
– Instructional background and skills to pass a rigorous observer certification assessment, or have already completed observer certification
– Adult learning theory, facilitation skills, and design of professional development
– Use and analysis of assessment data to inform instruction
– Experience and comfort observing and providing direct feedback to teachers, both written and verbal, that leads to immediate improvement
– Integrating technology, classroom observation, and supplementary materials

Qualifications
– A proven record of academic success working with students in historically underserved schools and setting high expectations for teachers and students
– Completion of rigorous classroom observation training preferred; LAUSD candidates will be required to have completed observer training and show evidence of certification (or commit to in‐depth training over the summer)
– At least three (3) years of successful full-time teaching experience
– At least two (2) years of successful school leadership experience (coaching, department chair, BTSA coach, peer observer, lead teacher, instructional specialist, mentor teacher etc.)
– An earned master’s degree or advanced degree preferred
– Ability to travel between seventeen schools in South Los Angeles, East Los Angeles, and Downtown Los Angeles (must possess a valid Driver’s License)
