Position Description: The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is seeking a Sustainable Forestry Education Program Development Specialist for the LEAF Program (Wisconsin K-12 Forestry Education Program). This position serves as an integral staff member of the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education (WCEE). The person in this position will develop innovative programs; provide support to meet the sustainable forestry education needs and interests of diverse teacher audiences; research and synthesize the needs and interests of teacher audiences; work collaboratively with LEAF and WCEE staff to develop programs and support. Department/University Description: The Wisconsin legislature created the WCEE in 1991 with a mission to promote, develop and evaluate the environmental education in the K-12 schools of Wisconsin. The WCEE continues to advance healthy and sustainable learning environments through education for pK-12 teachers and their students. The WCEE was placed in the College of Natural Resources (CNR) at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point (UWSP). The CNR offers premier undergraduate natural resources programs emphasizing integrated resource management and has 1400 undergraduates, 120 graduate students, and over 100 faculty and staff. UWSP is located in Stevens Point on the Wisconsin River, almost precisely in the center of the state. Enrollment is over 9000 students, who are currently served by 361 faculty, 398 academic/administrative staff, and 413 classified staff members. The 400-acre campus contains both historic and contemporary buildings in an attractively landscaped setting, bounded on one side by a 275-acre nature preserve including a 24-acre lake.
Bachelor’s degree required in Sustainability Education, Environmental Education, Science Education, Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Forestry, Agriculture Education, or a closely related field. Candidates must have experience working with teachers and experience developing and providing teacher professional development. Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills are required as is the ability to work alone and as part of a team. Candidates must have knowledge of sustainable forestry.
– Master’s degree in Sustainability Education, Environmental Education, Science Education, Education, Curriculum & Instruction, Forestry, Agriculture Education, or a closely related field.
– Qualitative research skills and experience. Understanding of school culture and operations.
– Passion for and dedication to forestry and sustainability education. Experience with environmental and sustainability education curriculum development and/or implementation.
– Leadership ability and experience ; leading project teams, creating programs, committee leadership. Innovative and entrepreneurial in program development and delivery.
– Experience working with diverse audiences in rural and urban settings.
Appointment Date: May 1, 2013
Terms of Employment: Full-time, fixed term, academic staff, annual appointment (12 month) with reappointment based on satisfactory evaluation. Salary is commensurate with experience. Benefits include University of Wisconsin insurance, retirement, vacation, holidays, and sick leave.
