Summer Camp Instructor (Seasonal)

The Audubon Society of Rhode Island is looking for qualified and dependable environmental educators for seasonal per-diem positions. The summer positions will require teaching, curriculum development, and outdoor leadership.

Summer Camp Instructor
Audubon is looking for an enthusiastic and dependable educator to lead up to eight weeks of summer day camp at Audubon’s Powder Mill Ledges in Smithfield. Summer camp instructors are responsible for leading week long nature day camp programs. They are responsible for designing age appropriate camp curriculum around set themes; leading instruction and outdoor explorations; and creating a fun, educational, and safe camp experience for all participants. Qualified candidates must have experience working with children in both indoor and outdoor settings. Knowledge of the natural sciences and of the local biodiversity is a must
Up to 8 weeks, June 24-August 16, 2013
Monday ; Friday, 8:30am to 3:30pm
Must attend camp training in June prior to the start of camp.

After Camp Care Instructors
Audubon is looking for qualified and dependable individuals to provide leadership of our new after camp care program in Smithfield and Bristol sites. Qualified individuals will be responsible for supervising children in an activity based after camp care setting. Experience working with children is a must.
Up to 8 weeks, June 24-August 16, 2013
Monday ; Friday, 2:45-5:45pm

Responsibilities for all positions:
• Teach environmental education programs in all settings (classrooms, Audubon refuges, city parks, etc.)
• Answer questions regarding natural history and environmental topics as needed.
• Work with animals used in education programs as necessary (reptiles, amphibians, raptors, arthropods).
• Serve as a liaison between the education community and the Audubon Society.
• Remain informed about current natural history and environmental issues.
• Keep program props, specimens and resource materials in useable shape.
• Miscellaneous other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

• Requires a Bachelors degree in one of the natural sciences or education.
• Experience working with children.
• Ability and willingness to work outdoors despite extremely sunny, hot or rainy conditions.
• Excellent communications skills.
• Able to work in teams as well as independently.
• Must be physically capable of walking several miles, and able to lift up to 35 pounds.
• Must be flexible and outgoing with a good sense of humor.
• Candidates should have reliable transportation.
• Must be First Aid/CPR certified.
• A mandatory BCI check is required upon hire.
