Job Description

As a Special Education Teacher, you will collaborate with staff and parents, differentiate lessons and curricular activities, and advocate for students’ needs. You will hold high academic and personal expectations of all students. Special Education Teachers report to the Special Needs Coordinator.

About Our School

Bedford Stuyvesant New Beginnings is a no excuses, results-focused urban charter school located in Brooklyn, NY that will eventually expand to serve students in grades K-8. Our students are predominantly African American children who receive free or reduced lunch. The leadership team is comprised of veteran educators and school management professionals. We strongly believe that every child is capable of academic success if every adult in the building is laser focused on breaking down the myriad barriers to learning our students must overcome.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Ensure that students meet or exceed the academic performance goals set forth in the school charter
  • Develop lesson plans that ensure achievement of the Common Core Standards and students’ IEP goals.
  • Deliver differentiated instruction, using a wide variety of instructional strategies, such that all students remain motivated and interested in learning
  • Create engaging materials for differentiated instruction
  • Use assessment data to refine curriculum and inform instructional strategy and practice
  • Actively participate and collaborate with instructional staff to conduct short and long-range planning to address the individual needs of students
  • Perform other duties as deemed appropriate by the Academic Leader, Special Needs Coordinator, and Director of Support Services
  • Initial or Permanent New York State Teacher Certification in Special Education (Grades 1-6 or Pre K – 6)
  • Bachelors degree or higher
  • Familiarity writing comprehensive, standards based IEPs that demonstrate educational benefit
  • Strong content knowledge within the academic discipline(s) covered by this position
  • 2 years of full-time classroom teaching experience in an inner-city, urban school with a student population socioeconomically similar to the students at our school
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated track-record working with special needs children within a regular classroom
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and manage the classroom such that instruction time is maximized
  • Demonstrated capacity to plan for and use a variety of instructional strategies such that every student receives instruction tailored to their unique learning needs
  • Capacity to design, develop and utilize a variety of informal and formal assessments of students’ academic progress
  • Strong time management and organizational skills
    • Proven ability to analyze and use data to drive instructional planning and delivery such that each individual student in the classroom receives the support necessary to meet or exceed the high academic expectations set forth in the school’s charter, the Common Core Standards, and as defined by the Academic Leader
