Senior Director of Development and Communications

Coro Center for Civic Leadership, Northern California is the oldest leadership training organization in the country. Founded in 1942, it is recognized for its effective and innovative programs: The Fellows Program in Public Affairs, a nine-month, post-graduate, full-time, experiential leadership training program, Coro Exploring Leadership, an intense eight-week summer program for public high school students in San Francisco and the East Bay, and the Coro Leadership Collaborative which brings the Coro brand of leadership training to organizations and communities.

Coro Center for Civic Leadership, Northern California is looking for a Senior Director of Development and Communications to become part of an exciting and dynamic leadership team. The individual will work directly with the CEO and the Vice President of Program Development to deliver on the mission, vision, and strategic plan of the organization. Comfort with a fast-paced collaborative environment is a must. Coro has a team approach with idea-sharing and feedback being important components. Ideas are encouraged, evaluated, and pursued. An individual who thrives in such a dynamic environment is essential.

The job will include collaborating with the CEO on development and communication strategies. The successful candidate will have the skills to lead development, oversee and help develop the delivery of the communication strategy, and work with the leadership team to take Coro to new heights. The position will have two direct reports the Communications and Development Manager and the Director of Alumni Relations.

The position is varied and fast paced. The successful candidate should be highly organized, have fundraising experience, be able to effectively manage staff, be a good communicator, thrive on collaboration, and be able to deliver on the goals of the organization. She/he will join a dynamic dedicated staff that sees leadership development as integral in creating a healthy society.

The Senior Director of Development and Communications will be responsible for the following:


Fundraising Plan

  • Develop comprehensive annual fundraising plan with input from CEO, Development Committee Chair, Communications and Development Manager, and Director of Alumni Relations


  • Steward and solicit existing supporting corporations
  • Develop plan to expand Coro’s corporate support
    • Work with board and CEO to schedule meetings, develop relationships, and solicit support

Major Donors

  • Cultivate, steward, and solicit major gifts from individuals and alumni
    • Responsibilities include:
    • Work with board and CEO to schedule meetings, develop relationships, and solicit support
    • Produce small cultivation and stewardship events

Appeals & Events

Annual Appeal

  • Develop and implement year-end Annual Appeal strategy with the Communications and Development Manager, in consultation with CEO

Leadership Luncheon

  • Develop strategy, manage, and implement plans for Coro’s biggest annual fundraising event, Coro’s 18th Annual Leadership Luncheon


  • Oversee and manage staff responsible for Foundation grant writing and development

Alumni Outreach

  • Manage Director of Alumni Relations and work collaboratively with CEO to develop annual alumni fundraising strategy

Communications and Marketing

·Supervise the Communications and Development Manager who, in partnership with a major branding firm, will project-manage a major overhaul of Coro’s brand including a new website

·In collaboration with Communications and Development Manager and CEO, oversee Coro’s communication plan


Manage Staff

·Communications and Development Manager

·Director of Alumni Relations

Organizational Development

·In partnership with the leadership team, drive strategic initiatives to improve overall team performance and organizational culture

·Assess organizational systems and work with staff to implement improved processes

Board & Committees

·Work with the CEO and Board to schedule and communicate all board related activities

·Prepare and distribute Board meeting packets in consultation with CEO

·Staff the Development Committee and the Marketing and Communications Committee

Experience and Skills Required:

  • Development/fundraising including event planning
  • Communication strategy and implementation
  • Understanding and experience with database management
  • Managing staff
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Good with people
  • A collaborator
  • Ability to manage up
  • Five or more years of working in development, fundraising, and marketing
  • College graduate
