Sierra Nevada Journeys (SNJ) is an educational non-profit dedicated to building higher-order thinking skills through outdoor science education. We accomplish this mission by applying modern educational theory to outdoor education delivered through hands-on learning programs including residential outdoor science camps, in-school courses, and teacher professional development. Through research and assessments, SNJ is demonstrating that outdoor science education is an effective catalyst for teaching critical thinking, helping schools hit Common Core achievement goals while introducing students to the wonders of the natural world. When schools are not in session, SNJ partners with community groups, mostly special needs and leadership development organizations, to fulfill their specific program goals.
We are seeking a Residential Programs Coordinator with experience directly managing, delivering and organizing outdoor school programs and summer camps. The Residential Programs Coordinator must be a highly organized professional who can effectively deliver weekly programs while managing the program Instructors and supporting staff.
The Programs Coordinator will be responsible for program preparation, coordination and facilitation of daily activities while maintaining a supportive and collaborative work environment with Residential Outdoor Science Instructors, cabin leaders, and SNJ operations staff. The Programs Coordinator will also be directly responsible for training, managing, and evaluating the Outdoor Science Instructors throughout the year. During the fall/spring the Programs Coordinator will primarily focus on outdoor science school programs. During the weekends and summers when schools are not in session, the Programs Coordinator will manage delivery of special needs, leadership development, and traditional summer camp programs against the backdrop of outdoor recreation, balancing educational and recreational program goals to ensure we deliver a fun and educational experience for our campers and families. During the winter, the Programs Coordinator will deliver limited programming, often as a direct instructor as our seasonal programs instructors roll off contract. During this ‘down-time’, the Programs Coordinator will be primarily focused on projects improving curriculum, training, and operations to support the mission of SNJ.
Coordinators manage programs at our Grizzly Creek Ranch Campus in Portola, California. The campus is situated among 1,500 acres of pristine Yellow Pine forest. Built in 2003, Grizzly Creek Ranch offers excellent program resources, including a challenge course, hiking trails, archery range, pond, and garden. The campus is within convenient travel distance to Lake Tahoe, Reno, Reno/Tahoe Airport and Plumas National Forest. It is also within 3 hours of Sacramento and 4 hours of the San Francisco area.

Areas of Responsibility
Manage delivery of high quality residential education programs
Manage delivery of assigned community programs (special needs, leadership development & Private groups) programs
Management of assigned staff and programs
Work with teachers, group leaders ,and staff to ensure all residential programs run smoothly
Coordinate logistics with incoming program contact before programs, lead SNJ staff prep and debrief meetings, and visit school and group leaders to discuss programing.
Facilitate staff trainings/weekly meetings/professional development
Actively be on site while programs are in session
Keep running inventory of all supplies
Act as “on call” director as needed
Manage and evaluate Outdoor Science Instructors, while empowering them to excel at program delivery
Ensure all programs are safe and meet local, State and American Camp Association requirements
Work with Campus Operations Manager for facility needs (housekeeping, maintenance and food service)
Direct supervision of high school student counselors and cabin leaders (during summer camp programs)
Oversee/Facilitate programs and nightly cabin checks
Deliver innovative curriculum, and programs for schools and summer camps
Visit schools to do pre and post site visits
A passion for working with students and making a difference through education!
1-3 years’ experience managing staff and overseeing camp programs
Bachelors in related field or equivalent life experience
Innate nature of being proactive and organized
Ability to manage multiple tasks and to be accountable to deliverables
The ability to take the initiative, think entrepreneurially, and work independently
Experience developing curriculum and training new instructors / teachers
Exceedingly professional in all contacts with campus guests
Ability to pass background check
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and hike up to 7 miles
Ability to work 30-60 ft. off the ground (challenge course delivery)
Challenge Course and ropes experience preferred
Current Red Cross First Aid & CPR
Current Wilderness First Responder Certification & lifeguard certification, or acquired 90 days after employment.
MUST have a positive “can do” attitude
