Residential Outdoor Educator

Friends of the National Zoo (FONZ) is looking for energetic college students and/or professionals to serve as residential outdoor educators for FONZ Nature Camp. FONZ offers weeklong residential programs for fifth through tenth grade students at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute in Front Royal, VA. Our site borders the Appalachian Trail and is adjacent to Shenandoah National Park, providing campers a unique opportunity to study the natural environment while learning about SCBI's global conservation programs.

In addition to leading activities on nature hikes and providing science instruction, our outdoor educators are responsible for the health and welfare of campers attending our week long program. The position runs from June 26th ; August 10th and staff live on-site during camp operations. We currently have openings for the below positions and this recruitment will be open until all positions have been filled.

Senior Residential Outdoor Educator (SROE)

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, have strong organizational skills, leadership experience in either camp or informal instructional settings, knowledge of the natural sciences, and a love and appreciation for wildlife and the outdoors. The SROE must live on site during the 6 week camp session and be available from June 26 ; August 10, 2014.

The SROE will perform daily administrative tasks including but not limited to creating schedules for campers and staff, coordination of supplies and writing of daily blog. S/he will enforce all established camp policies and procedures to ensure the health and welfare of campers and report concerns to supervisors. S/he will coordinate and lead camp programming, including but not limited to camp hikes, lessons, activities, and field trips.

Residential Outdoor Educator (ROE)

Applicants must be at least 21 years of age, have strong organizational skills, experience in either camp or informal instructional settings, knowledge of the natural sciences, and a love and appreciation for wildlife and the outdoors. The ROE must live on site during the 6 week camp session and be available from June 27 ; August 10, 2014.

The ROE will provide leadership and guidance to campers in all aspects of camp life. S/he will enforce all established camp policies and procedures to ensure the health and welfare of campers and report concerns to supervisors. S/he will develop and lead camp programming, including but not limited to camp hikes, lessons, activities, and field trips.

Qualifications:
• At least 21 years of age.
• Minimum of one year of college required.
• Experience working with children, preferably in a camp setting.
• Experience in informal or formal lesson development and facilitation.
• Coursework / experience in science, nature studies, or outdoor education.
• Current certification in American Red Cross First Aid and CPR required; additional lifeguard certification preferred (must be obtained by June 01, 2014).
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to hike up to 4 miles a day in all weather conditions.
• Responsible, self-motivated, enthusiastic, and punctual.
