Search for the President and CEO
East Bay Community Foundation
The East Bay Community Foundation (EBCF), a dynamic charitable foundation based in Oakland, California, seeks an experienced leader to serve as President and CEO. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the President serves as the chief executive for the EBCF, and is responsible for the strategic, financial, and operational leadership of the organization. Working in collaboration with 31 staff members, as well as an array of external partners, the successful candidate for this position will lead the Foundation's growth and advance its vital mission to transform the lives of underrepresented individuals and communities across the East Bay region.
Through its strategic investments, the EBCF is helping transform the lives of people in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties, a dynamic, diverse urban area that is home to roughly 2.5 million people and comprises such cities as Oakland, Richmond, Berkeley, Antioch, Walnut Creek, Concord, Pittsburg, Fremont, Livermore, Pleasanton and San Ramon. In 2012 alone, the Foundation granted $65 million in funding to dozens of organizations that provide countless benefits to the underserved communities in which they operate, including providing food, jobs, education, as well as funding for the arts, environment, and other areas. Currently, the Foundation has $304 million in assets under management, and its endowment stands at approximately $43 million. In addition to significant donor-directed grant-making, EBCF focuses its discretionary grant-making in two interrelated areas: 1) Support for young children to succeed, focusing on the critical period of birth to third grade, and 2) Enhancing economic opportunities for adults and families, particularly those with significant barriers to achieving employment and financial stability.
Established in 1928, EBCF was the first community foundation in northern California. Despite its small endowment relative to total assets, EBCF has a reputation for being resourceful and entrepreneurial, and in applying intellect and creativity to establish innovative programs and partnerships that have a major impact.
The next President will lead EBCF into a critically important period, as the need for the Foundation's support is greater than ever. With an increased focus on growing its endowment, diversifying funding resources, and reframing the organization's identity, EBCF will thrive and continue to grow its impact in deep and meaningful ways. The President will address an array of opportunities and challenges, including: 1) Continue to develop a vision and strategy to guide the EBCF to enhance its impact and influence; 2) Raise the visibility of EBCF across the East Bay community and beyond; 3) Grow and develop the Board of Directors; 4) Celebrate and maintain programmatic excellence; 5) Further define and strengthen organizational structure and cohesion; and 6)Increase unrestricted funds to the endowment and effectively leverage existing funds.
