Part- Time Position: Environmental Educator


The Wallerstein Collaborative is seeking a highly organized and motivated individual for an Environmental Educator position, beginning immediately. The Environmental Educator is responsible for conducting programs in both classrooms and outdoor settings focusing on nature exploration, citizen science, and service learning.

Specific primary tasks include delivering environmental education programs to K-12 classrooms and leading classes in citizen science monitoring of the Hudson River. The candidate must be comfortable teaching diverse groups of students, as well as leading trips to sites such as New York Botanical Garden, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Inwood Hill Park, Central Park and water quality monitoring sites.


  • Master’s degree in education or related field, or Graduate student with at least 2 years of work experience in Environmental Education.
  • Computer proficiency; knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of environmental issues and concepts.
  • Familiarity and relevant experience in environmental hands on projects (e.g school gardens, composting, water quality testing, etc.)

Start Date: March 2014

Hours: 20 hours/week (At least four days, Monday through Friday)

Salary: Commensurate with experience

The Wallerstein Collaborative for Urban Environmental Education was established in 2000 in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University. The Collaborative offers year-round programs in environmental education (EE) serving classroom teachers, students, faculty and the environmental community in the New York metropolitan area. The Collaborative has developed a wide range of programs and curricula serving pre-service teachers, classroom teachers, and K-12 students in environmental curricula and field experiences. The Collaborative works with over 100 non-profit organizations, environmental groups, K-12 schools, government agencies, colleges and universities in providing EE services for teachers and environmental educators in the form of workshops, courses, institutes, summer programs, field trips, citizen-science projects, and internships.
