NH Food Bank-SNAP Outreach

SNAP is the new name for the Food Stamp Program and it stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The Food Bank is the only organization in the state formally conducting SNAP application assistance and conducts the majority of SNAP Outreach in the state. The state Food Stamp Program has minimal resources to conduct outreach. The rural nature and large geography of the northern counties presents a challenge when trying to develop outreach partners on a part-time basis. A VISTA member would be an asset to assist the Food Bank in building capacity to expand SNAP Outreach in this region of New Hampshire. The North Country of New Hampshire, for the purposes of this project include Grafton, Carroll and Coos Counties. There is not 100% participation of income eligible families in these hard to reach areas. The SNAP participation rates for people in Grafton, Carroll and Coos Counties are 53%, 47% and 75% respectively. SNAP benefits provide resources for families to purchase food and participation in SNAP helps raise families out of poverty and improve food security. A VISTA member would provide capacity for the Food Bank to develop a remote SNAP Outreach program by training volunteers of partner agencies to provide online application assistance.
