Mental Health and School Counselor

Position Overview

The Counselor serves as a member of the student support team. S/he provides counseling to students and consults with teachers to support students' academic success and social-emotional growth and development. Responsibilities include:

Counseling Support and Case Management

  • Implement evidence-based interventions and individual or group counseling for students who are at risk of school failure due to social, behavioral, and/or emotional problems.
  • Provide community referrals, linkages, and community resources to address student and family needs and help students and families to effectively utilize such resources.
  • Provide crisis intervention support to students.
  • Facilitate student and parent education on topics that include mental health, trauma awareness, social skills, conflict mediation, grief, drug prevention, and other social-emotional issues that impact learning.
  • Recruit and supervise Counseling Interns obtaining relevant license or credential (e.g. MSW, PPS, etc.).

Student Support

  • Partner with administration on student conflict resolution and discipline by using Restorative Practices.
  • Collaborate with teachers, families and other providers to develop strategies to support students academically and behaviorally, including the design, implementation and monitoring of positive behavior support plans.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Principal and Advisory leaders to design and implement advisory activities or discussions that address issues or needs as they arise in the school community.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Principal to design and facilitate professional development for staff to promote the well-being of students, address barriers to learning, and build and maintain a safe and healthy learning environment.
  • Lead and participate in student supervision duties during morning drop-off, lunch, and recess.

Student Activities and Program Coordination

  • Collaborate with Assistant Principal, as well as teachers and parents, to plan and coordinate school community building activities, including club meetings, student orientation, student of the month assemblies, middle school dances, overnight outdoor education trips, community service projects, and student leadership programs.
  • Coordinate Puberty Education workshops provided by Planned Parenthood for 6th-8th grade students.
  • Collaborate with Assistant Principal to develop Peer Leadership class and program.

Academic Counseling and Main Office Support

  • Support the transition of elementary school students and families to middle school in collaboration with GPS Enrollment Director and GMS Leadership Team.
  • Provide resources and counseling to students and families for summer academic enrichment programs.
  • Collaborate with GPS Enrollment Director, Office Manager, and Principals to support eighth grade students, families and teachers with the high school enrollment process.
  • Manage high school application support along with Office Manager, including recommendations and transcripts.
  • Assist with main office duties, such as answering phone calls, receiving visitors, parent meetings, and attendance.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a MA degree from an accredited college or university in School Counseling, Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, or related field.
  • License or Intern Number as Psychologist, Social Worker, or Marriage and Family Therapist and/or Pupil Personnel Service (PPS) Credential strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of school programs and experience working with middle school students and families
  • Commitment to Gateway's unique educational mission and to working with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to manage student behavior in a manner consistent with the school's philosophy of restorative practices
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a dedicated staff and involved parent body
  • Excellent ability to prioritize goals and organize tasks
