Managing Director of NatureVest, The Nature Conservancy

NatureVest is an exciting new initiative focused on deal generation, capital deployment and thought leadership in the environmental impact investing space. A collaborative effort between JPMorgan Chase and The Nature Conservancy (TNC), NatureVest is positioned to bring together investors, conservation leaders, policymakers, and financing institutions to build the field of environmental impact investing and enable more capital to be allocated to investing in nature.

With the goal of attracting $1 billion of private capital for conservation projects that protect and restore the lands and waters upon which all life depends, Naturevest will be tasked with the following:

  • Establishing the nexus of thought leadership for natural capital investment by: producing new research, targeted convenings, and an interactive resource for practitioners and stakeholders
  • Developing transactions to deploy capital through investment products that offer both conservation impact and financial return
  • Organizing investors (institutional, private and philanthropic)) who will participate in transactions and/or funds

This is a unique and exciting opportunity for an entrepreneurial leader who is knowledgeable and passionate about leveraging financial markets to drive impact. Reporting to the Executive Vice President of Conservation Initiatives as well as a high-level external Board of Advisors drawn from the financial, policy and environmental sectors, the Managing Director will be responsible for the business planning, programmatic, financial and communications direction of NatureVest.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Set strategic direction and providing ongoing leadership for this ambitious multi-year, multi-stakeholder initiative
  • Provide guidance on organizational strategy, serving as a thought leader on environmental impact investing across TNC and the broader field
  • Serve as the leading liaison between TNC and its key funders, driving the collaboration between NatureVest and its community of support
  • Develop ongoing funding support from corporate and institutional funders
  • Conceptualize and articulate initiative goals, creating plans of action to attain those goals; identify and track metrics to measure success against those goals
  • Coordinate the design, preparation, and project management of strategic convenings for investors, non-governmental officials, philanthropists, and other stakeholders in a variety of forums
  • Elevate interest in and awareness of investment opportunities that support natural capital
  • Identify opportunities to expand the market for financial assets that protect and restore lands and waters, bringing together investors and investment opportunities
  • Drive the development of complex financial deals, leveraging the global reach of JPMorgan Chase, TNC, and a wide range of current and prospective partners
  • Oversee a team of 17, including four direct reports, four consultants and nine TNC employees working for others but with substantial time allocations to the centers activities
  • Recruit and manage the initiative’s Board of Advisors, which will be comprised of senior, globally recognized,


The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Twelve years of experience in a private sector environment, such as management consulting and investment banking, or with a leading conservation organization or government entity; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Commitment to the mission and values of TNC; prior experience in environmental conservation is preferred
  • Experience designing, implementing, and directing complex initiatives of strategic importance, including the management of budgets, the supervision of multidisciplinary professionals, and the coordination of the work of partners
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in impact investing, ideally with a focus on environmental impact investing
  • Experience in partnership development (partners, community, government, etc.), working effectively with a broad array of stakeholders with divergent needs
  • Sense of urgency, with the ability to manage multiple work streams on time and on budget while meeting or exceeding goals
  • Demonstrated success as an inspirational leader who has successfully motivated staff and partners to achieve and sustain excellence
  • Demonstrated leadership and visionary qualities and ability to work effectively with and through others in a decentralized and geographically dispersed organization
  • Proven interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to participate in and facilitate complex financial transactions
  • BA or BS required; M.B.A. or other degree with significant course work in finance or economics preferred
