Instructors ( ABE PRE-GED) & (ESOL)

The South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation (SoBRO)one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most successful inner city community development agenciesis seeking an individual to assist in our programmatic and general support fundraising activities with foundations, corporations, and government agencies. SoBRO’s services include educational and vocational programs for adults, in-school and after-school programs for youth, affordable housing development, entrepreneurial development and business assistance programs, and a wide spectrum of commercial revitalization activities.

The SoBRO Education and Career Development Division offers exciting, cutting-edge youth and adult programs that focus in the areas of education, career exploration, and leadership development. These programs provide participants with opportunities for self-development and expression through enrichment/project-based curricula.

SoBRO is seeking to hire an Instructor to teach Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

ESOL Instructor: Provide direct service to adult students, ages 16 and up, to help them obtain the necessary skills to be able to read, write, and compute proficiently in preparation for the GED exam or to help them obtain necessary English language skills so they will be able to read, write and speak proficiently to complete and solve problems, to use technology in order to become a lifelong learner and to be effective in the family, in the workplace and in the community.

  • Screen, evaluate, and identify students eligible for ESOL service
  • Administer and interpret BEST Plus test
  • Deliver appropriate ESOL instruction
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate appropriate instructional materials
  • Select, utilize and adapt appropriate second language learning techniques
  • Establish and maintain a daily schedule of instruction
  • Provide group instruction to classes
  • Report attendance, test scores, and outcomes as requested by funders

Provide indirect services to students:

  • Maintain documentation of evaluation, ongoing instructional programs, student progress and communications
  • Prepare reports and collect data as requested by supervisor
  • Consult counselors, administrators, and co-workers regarding ESOL program
  • Provide a comfortable and supportive learning environment
  • Adhere to curriculum
  • Track student outcomes; provide follow up services for documentation of outcomes

Professional Development:

  • Attend meetings and participate in department committees and in-service, as requested
  • Participate in the supervision/evaluation process
  • Perform other duties as assigned

ABE Instructor: Provide direct service to adult students, ages 16 and up, to help them obtain the necessary skills to be able to read, write, and compute proficiently in preparation for the GED exam.

Instruct in the program in a manner that supports student retention and daily attendance consistent with the Adult Learning Standards while assisting students in meeting education goals. These duties will include the following:

  • Interpret TABE exam
  • Deliver appropriate ABE instruction
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate appropriate instructional programs
  • Establish and maintain a daily schedule of instructionProvide group instruction as scheduled by the agency
  • Report attendance, test scores, and outcomes as requested by funders

Provide indirect services to students:

  • Maintain documentation of evaluation, ongoing instructional programs, student progress, and communications
  • Prepare reports and collect data as requested by the Director of Education and required by private and public funders
  • Attend related meetings relevant to program and students
  • Consult counselors, administrators, and co-workers regarding ABE program
  • Present and interpret program to a variety of audiences in a variety of settings, if necessary
  • Provide a comfortable and supportive learning environment
  • Adhere to curriculum

Professional Development:

  • Attend and participate in staff meetings of the ECD Division as required
  • Participate in 14 hours of professional development/in-service per year as it is provided
  • Participate in the supervision/evaluation process
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications and Other Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts/Science Degree required
  • Current New York State teacher certification, (ESOL preferred)
  • At least two years of successful teaching experience with an adult population and literacy training and/or experience for ESOL instructor

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities/Other:

  • Ability to set appropriate priorities, plan work systematically, and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of project-based learning
  • Demonstrated problem solving
  • Excellent organization, communication, and decision making skills
  • Able to manage multiple time sensitive assignments
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus
