Horticulture Intern

CHDC is a non-profit organization committed to developing permanent affordable housing through out Manhattan’s neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen. Since 1973, CHDC has been equally commitment to developing community and lasting green space along side affordable housing. The horticulture crew at CHDC designs, installs and maintains garden spaces throughout the 40 properties, including rooftop gardens, courtyards, terraces, backyards and numerous street side plantings. CHDC is also instrumental in creating and supporting several community gardens, city parks and urban agriculture projects.


  • Maintain CHDC garden properties; tasks include weeding, watering, mulching, installing annual plantings, delivering compost and other tasks as necessary;
  • Install new garden projects;
  • Interact with public in a courteous manner;
  • Efficiencies in time management and project completion;
  • Assist with community wide events, leading groups of volunteers;
  • Working some weekend hours;


  • Minimum of one year of professional field experience and/or horticultural school;
  • Ability to take direction and work well with others;
  • Ability to lift up to 40lb.
  • Energetic, motivated and hardworking
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions;
  • Joy in a fast paced work place with the ability to juggle different and diverse projects at one time
  • Ability to work well and communicate with a diverse community;

Duration: March-December

Compensation: $15 / hour
