High School Teachers - All Subject Areas

Overview: The mission of Broome Street Academy is to prepare vulnerable students to graduate with a Regents diploma. We believe that, when adequately supported, all students can achieve anything. When teachers have high expectations, and when teachers believe that students can overcome even significant barriers, their students will rise to the occasion. The Academy’s teachers will be highly qualified professionals, meaning they are experts in content and masters at using varied instruction methodologies. Teachers will do whatever it takes to ensure their students graduate with a Regents diploma.

Broome Street Academy is partnered with The Door, a nationally-renowned youth services organization, to provide a unique model that seamlessly integrates a rigorous academic curriculum and youth development services all under one roof. The school serves as a national model for addressing the needs of all students, especially those in need of additional support. We’re recruiting for high school teachers in all subject areas including: Math, English, Science, Social Studies, Special Education, Technology, Physical Education, and Arts (Dance, Music) to served during the 2014-2015 school year.


  • Develop lesson plans that ensure the mastery of state learning standards and any additional specific learning standards set forth by the Academy
  • Differentiate daily lessons and continuously refine teaching methodologies to meet the needs of all students
  • Ensure students attain the achievement goals of the Academy’s accountability plan
  • Strike a balance between “direct instruction” and “project based learning”
  • Maintain and enhance expertise in a specified content area
  • Participate in all required school professional development activities
  • Coordinate lesson plans with other teachers and reinforce student knowledge on an interdisciplinary basis
  • Observe other teachers and provide constructive feedback on teaching practice
  • Provide direct and indirect instruction to large and small student groups
  • Prepare students adequately for all required assessments
  • Evaluate students’ progress and serve as advisors
  • Maintain individual achievement plans (IAPs) for all students in their advisory groups
  • Maintain constant communication and coordination between various service providers for their advisory groups and other students in classes they teach
  • Actively participate in case conferences with service providers
  • Carry out the necessary functions to maintain a visually stimulating an welcoming classroom environment
  • Engage in effective and appropriate classroom management


  • Bachelor’s degree and NYS Teacher certification in a relevant subject area (unless covered under the certification exemptions of the NYS Charter School Law)
  • Minimum of three years of teaching experience and demonstrated experience working with a vulnerable student population such as young people from high poverty communities or in marginalized housing situations
  • Dual-certification and/or experience with Special Education highly preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in subject area as shown by significant undergraduate or graduate coursework in content area
  • Ability to engage the interest of students, meet student achievement goals and be held accountable for student results
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate tests and other measurements of achievement
  • Must be flexible and resilient in the face of very intense and heavy work situations
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse students, including those with special needs and English Language Learners
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with and engage the participation of parents and other student care-givers
