Small progressive private school is seeking a Head of School to lead, guide and inspire teachers
and staff to deliver meaningful academics and excellent age-appropriate curriculum through a
progressive teaching and learning program, and to develop and encourage a strong,
foundational communal atmosphere among families and faculty.
Candidates should have a bachelor’s degree (Master’s preferred) in education, several years of
preschool or elementary classroom experience, significant school leadership experience, and a
deep commitment to progressive education. Candidates must also have experience with
inquiry based learning and constructivist pedagogy and the work of child
development psychologists such as Piaget, Dewey, and Vygotsky. Preference for candidates with
experience with the Reggio Emilia educational system (and/or Montessori or Waldorf).
The Head of School will:
• Manage all day-to-day operations including staffing and budget.
• Support the teaching staff through facilitative leadership and mentor new teachers.
• Provide guidance in developing intellectually challenging and emotionally satisfying
curricula for children that foster creativity, critical thinking and communication skills.
• Spearhead community outreach that includes admissions, marketing, and development
efforts and work closely with the chairs of the parent volunteer groups in each of these
• Report to the Board of Trustees on the status of the school, and collaborate in the
creation and implementation of short and long term goals for the school.
In our program we use the outdoor world and the mid-Atlantic biome as our primary classroom,
so candidates must also have a true love of nature and being outdoors in all weather; respect
and appreciation for creatures, including, insects, small wildlife and birds, and a true
appreciation for the need for children to get muddy, dirty and wet.
This is a full time position, Monday – Friday 7:30 am – 4:00 pm. This opening is available
