Growing Skills Crew Leader (summer)

UVM Extension’s Youth Agriculture Project seeks a Crew Leader for Growing Skills, a VT Department of Labor-funded job-training program for at-risk youth ages 15-21, based in Brattleboro. The youth crew will work in pairs out on local farms, joining weekly for a day of professional development and cooking together.

With the program coordinator, the crew leader is a coach, teacher, boss, and mentor for 8 youth. This is a demanding position and opportunity to help disadvantaged youth develop skills that range from food literacy to communication, teambuilding, and leadership.

• Accompany and support youth crew members in greenhouse, garden, kitchen, marketing, and field work;
• Coordinate with youth crew members, farmers, program coordinator, and case managers;
• Plan and lead workshops (such as pest identification, canning and freezing food, art in the garden, interview skillz, etc.) with other staff and with community partners;
• Model strong, positive life and job skills.

Local to southeast Vermont strongly preferred. Relevant experience with high-needs audiences and/or teaching is a priority, with hands-on agricultural experience and knowledge a plus. Must be self-motivated, responsible, adaptable, enthusiastic, and organized; work well in a team; and have excellent communication skills.

Terms: Hourly wage is $15 for 20 hours weekly for 8 weeks starting July 7th. Opportunities include teaching experience, practicum/internship credit if applicable, connecting with local and state food system efforts, plenty of fresh organically grown food from the field.

To apply, send a cover letter, resume, and contact info for 2 references, asap. Applications will be accepted until the position is filled.
