Background

GRID Alternatives (www.gridalternatives.org) is a rapidly growing non-profit organization that provides renewable energy and energy efficiency services to low-income families. Through our flagship Solar Affordable Housing Program, we train and lead teams of volunteers and job trainees to install solar electric systems for low-income homeowners throughout California. We have seven regional offices statewide, coordinated through our Headquarters office in Oakland.

We are looking for a highly motivated individual to work directly with GRID’s CEO, COO/CFO, and Operations Manager to provide executive administrative assistance and work on a wide variety of special projects related to national expansion, operational efficiency, internal training and culture, and board efficiency. For the right, highly motivated individual, this position can provide non-profit leadership training as it will provide direct access to the founders and executive leadership of a successful, high-growth non-profit.

Solar Corps

The Program Fellow will join GRID Alternatives 2013/2014 class of Solar Corps fellows. Solar Corps is an opportunity for motivated and enthusiastic people to join GRID Alternatives for a one-year term. Corps members will gain valuable experience in the solar and non-profit industry to help launch their career while making significant contributions to GRID Alternatives and the broader community.

All Solar Corps members are provided with hourly compensation at $8.00/hour, health and dental benefits, paid time off, continuing education opportunities, and an additional $3,600 end of year award upon completion of the one-year program. On July 1, 2014, the hourly compensation increases to $9.00/hour. The Program Fellow is a non-exempt, 40 hour per week position working directly with GRID Alternatives executive leaders at our Headquarters in Oakland.

Duties

•Help create and implement training programs for GRID Alternatives staff. Tasks include organization and coordination of annual Staff Summit, identifying needs for new or improved training, develop training materials, and assist in providing training to staff.

•Help improve central systems to improve efficiency and share best practices throughout GRID Alternatives’ network. Tasks include improving and updating online tools such as Salesforce.com and the GRID Alternatives Intranet, and working with outside technical volunteers to both enhance these systems and implement new ones based on current technologies

•Perform research on geographic expansion opportunities for new regions in 2015 and beyond. Work closely with CEO and COO on identifying areas and parameters for expansion.

•Work with the Operations Manager to support GRID’s equipment partnerships and IT infrastructure

•Responsible for some executive assistance duties including meeting and travel scheduling for the Executive Team and administrative duties as needed

•Provide staff support for meetings of GRID Alternatives’ Board of Directors, including taking meeting minutes, preparing board packets, arranging meeting logistics, and ordering food

•Help document GRID Alternatives’ operations and program to standardize and support replication of our model throughout California and beyond. Tasks include document revisions to organizational best practices and helping update GRID Alternatives’ Operations Manual.

Position Requirements

•Strong comfort with web-based technology

•Excellent communication skills – both written ability as well as ability to communicate professionally with a wide variety of stake holders

•Excellent computer skills in basic office productivity applications (helpful if you are an excel wiz)

•Ability to relate to diverse populations

•Highly organized and detail oriented

•Self starter – extremely motivated, ability to work independently

•Flexible and willing to embrace change, go the extra mile, and bring ideas and energy to rapidly growing organization

Preferred Qualifications

•Experience working in economically disadvantaged communities and with diverse populations

•Experience working with databases and Salesforce

•Spanish (verbal and written)

•Passion for environmental justice and working with low-income communities, sustainability, affordable housing, and the environment

•Experience or knowledge of the basics of solar energy

•Willingness to travel. GRID Alternatives provides travel reimbursement.

Office Location

We are located in North Oakland. Some travel may be required.

Start Date

Open until filled. Anticipated start date is December, 2013 or January, 2014.
