The Chelsea Collaborative is a community-based agency whose mission is to empower Chelsea residents and Chelsea organizations to enhance the social, environmental, and economic health of the community and its residents. The Collaborative carries out its mission through community organizing, technical assistance, program development, and information dissemination. The Collaborative's programs and projects include The Chelsea Green Space and Recreation Committee, the Chelsea Latino Coalition, The Chelsea Latino Immigrant Committee, Chelsea United in Defense of Education, the Chelsea Voter Initiative, the Summer Youth Employment Initiative and the Chelsea Community Fund.
The Chelsea Collaborative seeks a full-time Community Organizer to work with the Chelsea Green Space and Recreation Committee, a community-based volunteer board that works to bring about environmental justice in Chelsea and beyond. This work focuses on making polluters accountable; developing and advocating for increased open and green space; improving air, land and water quality; and developing new leadership to achieve these goals. The Chelsea Green Space and Recreation Committee focuses on engaging residents in Chelsea and neighboring communities.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced community organizer with familiarity in environmental and public health issues and will be fully bilingual in Spanish and English.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
·Oversee and implement the work plan of the Chelsea Green Space and Recreation Committee including campaigns, monthly meetings, sub-committee meetings and special events.
·Support the youth program, the Environmental Community Organizers (ECO); and supervise and support the Junior Green Space Organizer.
·Ensure the youth program is increasing its capacity and skills.
·Conduct outreach to community residents, youth, businesses, churches and civic groups through one-on–one meetings, door knocking, house meetings, attending community meetings, flyer creation and distribution, etc.
·Recruit and develop potential community leaders.
·Convene and run meetings and events.
·Plan and implement annual events such as Earth Day and River Revel.
·Publicize meetings, invite special guests, take meeting minutes, and follow up on action agenda.
·Coordinate and partner with other non-profits and government agencies.
·Provide assistance and guidance to volunteers and interns.
·Participate in local and regional coalitions
·Write press releases and foster relationships with media.
·Assist with Annual Collaborative events
- Maintain accurate records; produce timely written and verbal reports, including monthly board reports.
- Understand, support and implement the agency's vision, mission and programmatic goals.
- Other tasks as assigned by the Executive Director and/or Associate Executive Director.
·Two years of direct organizing or related experience
·Bilingual (Spanish/ English)
·Strong verbal and written skills
·Good computer skills - Microsoft Office, e-mail, database software, desktop publishing a plus
·Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
·Ability to work in a team, as well as to take initiative and work independently
·Ability to handle multiple and complex projects
·Ability to work with a diverse range of people and to motivate them to become involved in community work
·Enthusiastic, flexible, self-motivated, dependable, responsible and creative.
·Commitment to social and environmental justice efforts a must
·Ability to work evenings and weekends
·Experience with Popular Education and knowledge of environmental justice issues a plus
