Grants Manager Job Description

 

Sierra Nevada Journeys (SNJ) is a Reno, NV based education nonprofit dedicated to partnering with schools to build higher-order thinking skills through outdoor science education. We accomplish this Mission by applying modern educational theory to outdoor education delivered through hands-on learning programs include in-school courses, residential outdoor science camps and teacher professional development. Through research and assessments, SNJ is demonstrating that outdoor science education is an effective catalyst for teaching critical thinking, helping schools hit Common Core achievement goals while introducing students to the wonders of the natural world.

We are seeking a Grants Manager to be one of our primary fundraisers -- articulating the organization’s mission and project goals in written proposals that inspire donors to support SNJ. The Grants Manager must be a highly organized professional who can effectively manage weekly submissions of new grant applications throughout the year while managing awarded grant reports and supporting grant-maker stewardship. This key team-member will also spend non-structured time researching potential funding opportunities and developing concepts collaboratively with program leads. Successful applicants have proven experience in research, proposal development, and grant writing/reporting. Though fundraising experience in our region or industry is a plus, the priority for this position is someone who is enthusiastic about SNJ, is driven to generate funds in support of the students we serve, and can effectively manage the organization’s grant calendar to reach our fundraising goals. The Grants Manager reports to the Director of Philanthropy and works closely with Marketing and Education teams.

Areas of Responsibility 

Grant Writing / Reporting (75%) 

 Manage Grants Calendar

o Maintain SNJ’s Grants Calendar (includes reports and quarterly grant-maker stewardship)

o Report on Grants submitted, win-loss, stewardship, and upcoming opportunities

 Manage the organization’s grant planning and writing efforts including:

o Collaborate with team on development of program description and budgeting

o Write and submit grants on behalf of the organization

 1.5-1.75 grants / week on average

o Prepare and submit grant reports

o Develop 1-2 National Science Foundation, EPA, or similarly large $+1million grant applications each year (in collaboration with Education team)

 

Grant Research (25%) 

 Work with the program leads to understand and then document a regularly updated fund-able projects list

 Research new funding sources using online databases, 990 research, and web-research

 Outline potential new funding opportunities collaboratively with team

 Manage LOI / Application process, and enlist Director of Philanthropy or CEO to meet with potential funding organizations

 

Required Qualifications 

 Passionate commitment to SNJ’s mission and strategic direction

 1-2 years’ experience in individual grant management – researching, writing and reporting, with demonstrated success in sourcing and obtaining grant funding

 Excellent written communication skills, including use of Microsoft office products to create professional proposals, applications, and reports

 Proven track record of working independently to organize and meet multiple deadlines requiring collaboration in a fast-paced organization

 Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and to be accountable to project deliverables

 Willingness to own and incorporate feedback on the ‘voice’ of Sierra Nevada Journeys

 High energy, positive, “can-do” attitude, flexibility, teamwork, and attention to detail

 Ability to thrive in an environment characterized as passionate, fast-paced, creative, dynamic and growing

 For a highly experienced individual, we would consider job-share or part-time
