earch for Founding Executive Director, Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay

Brooklyn College, City University of New York

The City University of New York and Brooklyn College seeks a dynamic and innovative scientist to serve as Founding Director of the newly formed Science and Resilience Institute at Jamaica Bay (SRIJB). This is an exceptional opportunity for a strategic and enterprising leader to join a rapidly developing Institute committed to advancing knowledge on how disturbances impact natural and human systems in urban watersheds through resiliency-focused research.

The City University of New York is leading a consortium of academic and non-profit organizations, including Columbia University, Cornell University/New York Sea Grant, NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, Rutgers University, Stevens Institute, Stony Brook University, and the Wildlife Conservation Society. The consortium is tasked with establishing and operating the SRIJB in conjunction with the project’s initial sponsors, the U.S. National Park Service and the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.

The SRIJB is a robust and exciting new initiative that will be both an important contributor of scientific knowledge and a major creator of opportunities for resilience practice in the socio-ecological systems in and around Jamaica Bay and beyond. In addition to its role in coordinating and leading science research in the field of resilience, it is expected to play an important role in public policy initiatives in the Bay through its respective public agency and stakeholder constituent arms. The former includes all local, state and federal agencies with jurisdiction in the area of Jamaica Bay; the latter includes non-profits and community organizations committed to the wellbeing of the Bay. These entities are already in operation as components of SRIJB.
