FARM & GARDENS MANAGER

The River School Farm is a working farm, landscape development enterprise, educational center and events venue. We are home to a dedicated group of individuals working to demonstrate, teach and advocate for sustainable living practices in the Truckee River watershed. We grow food year round in our gardens and around Reno. We design and construct landscapes that resonate with the high desert environment and create unique food growing spaces for community residents, schools and businesses. Located along the Truckee River, we offer an ideal space for community gatherings and we provide educational opportunities for local schools and students of all ages. We also offer an event venue for music and dance performances, weddings and celebrations. 

We are looking for a passionate and experienced individual to coordinate our farm and garden maintenance operations. The ideal candidate is organized, resourceful, driven and enthusiastic about our mission and committed to being a key player in our organization. This is a full time seasonal position.

Job Description:

The role of the Farm & Gardens Manager is to manage the maintenance and production of client landscapes and/or gardens. The Farm & Gardens Manager will oversee Garden Crew members & Farm interns, administer existing contracts with clients, serve as the primary liaison between clients and the River School Farm and be responsible for the ongoing maintenance of existing edible and landscape gardens.

Responsibilities include:

+ Coordinate the administration of edible gardens and landscapes:

-       Act as a primary liaison to new and potential clients

-       Manage the project proposal process

-       Work in conjunction with RSF staff to ensure proper construction & maintenance planning and implementation

-       Assist with bidding and budget proposals

+ Oversee the food production gardens contracted out the River School Farm:

-       Manage daily upkeep, planning, planting, maintenance & harvest of vegetable, herbs and flowers at client farm sites

-       Participate in the management of the farm budget, labor allocation and sales records

-       Communicate regularly with farm clients to fulfill orders, harvest and plan subsequent plantings based on their needs.

-       Develop an Organic System Plan for our Patagonia farm and manage the organic certification process

+ Ensure new and existing gardens and landscapes are efficiently managed and maintained:

-       Coordinate the administrative aspects of garden maintenance, including client communication, marketing, planning, and budget management

-       Lead and manage Garden Crew and Farm Interns in the implementation of garden plans and maintenance duties including but not limited to:

o   Performing general landscape and garden maintenance (debris removal, lawn care, weeding, pest control, etc.)

o   Constructing garden landscapes, raised beds, and other landscape elements

o   Repair of irrigation systems

o   Planting and maintenance of both edible and landscape plants

o   Pruning and training woody plants

o   Crop planning, cultivation, and harvest using deep organic methods

+ Work with River School Farm staff to develop a strategy and implementation plan for the RSF edible gardens and landscaping program that includes:

-       Developing marketing and promotional materials for prospective residential & commercial clients

-       Researching potential models for edible commercial landscapes and implementing a procurement strategy for new sites/clients

-       Outlining our services based on research and program development

-       Coordination with potential/existing clients

+ Additional cooperation with RSF staff to address administration, farm management, educational programming, special events and landscape development as needed:

-       Assist in the maintenance and production of the River School Farm River Farm gardens and in the processing of farm products

-       Coordinate with Farm Staff to ensure maintenance, upkeep and harvesting regimens of edible landscapes

-       Assist with general RSF administrative tasks, marketing, outreach and program development

-       Participate in educational programming at RSF which may include: conducting farm tours; leading school group visits and activities; coordinating and planning workshops; assisting with other educational programs

-       Participate in event planning and management for RSF special events and weddings

-       Assist with project planning and bidding for landscape design and construction proposals

 

Qualifications

·       A strong interest in environmental, edible and organic landscape design and maintenance

·       Horticulture and gardening experience, education, or degree

·       A positive attitude & strong work ethic

·       Experience with landscape maintenance and use of garden tools and equipment

·       Strong working knowledge of edible garden plants (fruiting vines, fruit trees, vegetables)

·       Ability to work independently and as part of a team

·       A valid driver's license and reliable transportation to and from job sites

·       Preference will be given to applicants that are passionate about sustainable food production and applying deep organic principles to garden maintenance
