Executive Director

The American Volkssport Association (AVA) Executive Director plans, organizes, directs and coordinates the programs, activities and staff (paid and volunteer) of the Association to ensure objectives are met, plans fulfilled, and members’ needs satisfied. The Executive Director participates in formulation of new policies and acts as the face and voice of AVA to the American public. The Executive Director is the primary fundraiser for AVA and actively recruits sponsors, partners and advertisers for AVA through effective marketing and business development activities. Some travel is required to attend two to four meetings per year of the National Executive Council (NEC).


The Executive Director must have strong leadership skills and should be an excellent manager/administrator, skilled negotiator and proven fundraiser. The ED must quickly develop a strong understanding of AVA’s projects and programs and have outstanding communication skills to motivate member clubs, attract new club members and develop new sponsors and partners. As the face of AVA, the ED must demonstrate commitment to AVA’s primary objective: promoting an active and healthy lifestyle. Candidates must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree and 5 years experience in a leadership role in a nonprofit organization with specific experience in the following:

·Effectively managing and motivating paid staff and volunteers

·Successfully working with leaders of non-profit or sports-oriented non-profit organizations

·Effective fundraising through donors, sponsorships and/or partnerships

·Working with community organizations, municipal and state and national agencies or partner organizations to achieve goals for publicity and organizational growth

·Working with Board of Directors in financial and program management

·Public speaking, marketing and publicity

Additional skills required:

·Ability to plan and implement organization-wide activities

·Ability to interact effectively with a Board of Directors, Committee Chairs and membership

·Knowledge of web technology and marketing communication channels, including social media

·Knowledge of grant writing and the grant proposal process is desirable
