Executive Director

Qualifications: The executive director will ideally possess the following attributes:

  • Bachelor’s degree minimum; master’s degree or equivalent experience preferred in the areas of public policy, government relations, environmental science, law, nonprofit marketing or management.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage simultaneous projects to completion on deadline
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills; lobbying and advocacy communications experience a plus
  • Grant-writing and reporting proficiency
  • Fundraising experience with individuals, campaigns, foundations, members and/or event sponsors
  • Experience with nonprofit financial management, including preparing governance materials for board of directors
  • Working knowledge of and/or demonstrated aptitude for environmental conservation and historic preservation issues facing Virginia
  • High degree of professional integrity; inspirational leadership and team-building skills

Responsibilities: The executive director is responsible for:

  • Day-to-day management of the network’s four-person staff and interagency working groups comprised of conservation professionals
  • Strategic leadership and tactical communications support for the network’s ongoing advocacy campaigns (currently these include river restoration/ access, clean energy/climate change, and maintaining Virginia’s ban on uranium mining)
  • Overseeing production of the network’s policy research publications and educational workshops
  • Fundraising from foundations and individuals to meet and grow the network’s $300,000+ budget
  • Assisting the board of directors to fulfill its governance and strategic planning responsibilities
  • Maintaining strong, positive working relationships with the network’s affiliated organization’s and regional partners such as National Wildlife Federation and Choose Clean Water
  • Some travel and evening and weekend work is required, particularly during the Virginia General Assembly session
