Executive Director

A competitive nationwide search is underway for the Executive Director of Youth In Action, in Providence, Rhode Island. The job description appears below. Date of employment is expected to be October 2014.

YIA seeks a highly organized and entrepreneurial professional to work with a dedicated team of youth and adults as the organization's Executive Director. The Executive Director is responsible for the professional leadership and management of YIA, working in concert with the board, staff, and community of support to achieve YIA's mission, goals, and objectives. Responsibilities include hiring and supervising staff; overseeing the operation and growth of programs; grant writing and developing relationships with private and public donors; organizational development and strategic planning; engaging in public relations; ensuring that YIA is managed in a fiscally responsible manner; implementing Board policy; supporting YIA's youth leaders; and maintaining community partnerships. The Executive Director reports to a fifteen-member Board of Directors, which is comprised of both youth and adults, and directly supervises a management team of four.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Staff Management

  • Provide strong, creative and energetic leadership and direction to adult staff, youth staff and volunteers
  • Maintain a workplace that attracts, retains and motivates a diverse and talented staff
  • Support staff development and education
  • Evaluate staff performance annually

Program Oversight

  • Oversee operation, development and growth of high-quality programs that meet the needs of changing demographics in Providence and the requirements of YIA's funders
  • Ensure that program reporting is completed in a thorough and accurate manner

Fundraising

  • Create a realistic and ambitious annual fundraising plan
  • Meet or exceed fundraising goals
  • Solicit grants and prepare applications from existing and new private and public funding sources
  • Cultivate relationships with individual donors
  • In conjunction with staff, plan and manage at least one fundraiser event each year
  • Ensure that all contributions are properly acknowledged
  • Oversee the use and regular maintenance of YIA's fundraising database

Public Relations

  • Oversee development of clear and consistent communication in all YIA promotional and fundraising materials including newsletters, press releases, event invitations and the YIA website
  • Represent YIA as a spokesperson to the media and general public and pursue positive media coverage of YIA
  • Merge YIA's goals to the larger goals of our community by establishing strong relationships with funders, other non-profit organizations, government officials and the business community

Financial Oversight

  • In concert with the Finance Director, submit and receive timely board approval for the annual budget, and manage the budget in a fiscally responsible manner throughout the year
  • Complete a yearly financial review in conjunction with the Finance Director and a contract Accountant

Board Activities

  • Assist the Board as it develops long-range strategies, policies and direction to achieve the YIA mission
  • Support recruitment, orientation, and training of the Board
  • Directly support the youth Board Co-Chairs and adult Vice Chair
  • Attend all Board meetings and provide administrative support to ensure that the Board is kept informed about YIA
  • Work closely with members of YIA's Board of Directors, particularly the youth majority, to ensure the Board is meeting its legal and ethical obligations

Youth Support

  • Serve as a supporter, advocate and mentor for YIA youth
  • Support positive youth development at YIA in general
  • Support alumni relations

COMPETENCIES AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Genuine interest in young people and an ability to relate to youth. Must be willing and eager to listen to and respect youth, and to take direction from young people. Must be knowledgeable about issues facing urban youth.
  • Experience working with young people and communities of color a strong plus
  • Demonstrated success in non-profit fundraising
  • Experience managing an comparable organizational budget
  • Highly organized and self-directed. Ability to prioritize multiple interests and demands, and manage time effectively. Flexible and adaptive to change
  • Strong team player with the ability to select, train, develop, motivate and inspire a multi-cultural staff, and build beneficial external relationships and networks
  • Willing to work an irregular, demanding schedule that includes after-hours contact with youth
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Entrepreneurial with creative problem solving and strategic thinking skills
  • Promote healthy organizational growth and culture
  • Experience with developing and supporting an effective Board of Directors
  • Excellent written skills
  • Excellent oral communication skills, both interpersonal and public speaking
  • Strong computer skills—fluency with Windows and Mac operating systems, MS Word, Excel, and programs like Constant Contact
  • Knowledge and comfort with current communication trends including, but not limited to, social media, internet and e-mail marketing is a plus

The ideal candidate will also have a sense of humor and the flexibility, understanding, energy, and spirit of innovation necessary for work in a non-profit environment.
